The Big 5 WFTDA Sponsored Tournaments

2010 Big 5 Tournaments

The "Big 5" tournaments consist of four Regional Playoff Tournaments and the WFTDA Championship Tournament held each year between September and November.

The full 2010 WFTDA tournament schedule is as follows:

• Sept. 10-12 – North Central Region Playoffs, Thunda on the Tundra, co-hosted by the Brewcity Bruisers and PMI Entertainment in Green Bay, WI
• Sept. 24-26 – East Region Playoffs, Derby in the Burbs, hosted by Suburbia Roller Derby in White Plains, NY
• Oct. 1-3 – West Region Playoffs, Rollin on the River, hosted by the Sacred City Derby Girls in Sacramento, CA
• Oct. 8-10 – South Central Region Playoffs, Amber Waves of Pain, hosted by the No Coast Derby Girls in Lincoln, NE
• Nov. 5-7 – WFTDA Championships, hosted by the Windy City Rollers in Chicago, IL

2009 Big 5 Tournaments

In previous years, there was just one regional tournament for each half of the country (East and West), and one national tournament for the eight teams who qualified from both regional tournaments. With the creation of four regions in 2008 (West, North Central, South Central, and East), we now have five tournaments, called the “Big Five:”

Oly Rollers win 2009 WFTDA National Championships

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) congratulates the Oly Rollers of Olympia, WA, on winning the 2009 WFTDA National Tournament. The WFTDA tournament season came to an end on Nov. 15, 2009 after the top 12 seeds for the 2009 roller derby season faced off at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA, at an event hosted by the Philly Roller Girls. Appropriately named "Declaration of Derby," the National Tournament once again brought together the best talent flat-track roller derby has to offer.

The Oly Rollers joined WFTDA in April 2008, and this was the first tournament season in which the league was eligible to participate. The Cosa Nostra Donnas won the 2009 Western Regional Tournament in October and entered the 2009 National Tournament as the #1 seed from their region, earning a first-round Bye. The team defeated two prior national champions, Gotham Girls Roller Derby (2008) and Texas Rollergirls (2006), on their path to claim The Hydra, WFTDA’s championship trophy.

The Texas Rollergirls of Austin, TX, took second place in the tournament, followed by the Denver Roller Dolls in third place and the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls in fourth place.
