WFTDA.tv Launches!

The May 12th face-off between the West Region's #4 Denver Roller Dolls' Mile High Club and the #3 Rose City Rollers' Wheels of Justice was a showcase of West Coast skill and derby know-how that also marked the debut of WFTDA.tv, WFTDA's new online broadcast channel in collaboration with Blaze Streaming Media.

"The WFTDA saw such a tremendous response from fans during the 2011 Championships that we wanted to offer viewers even more coverage during the months leading up to this year's Playoffs," Erica 'Double H' Vanstone, Head of WFTDA Broadcast Operations, said. "In 2012, WFTDA.tv will continue to grow in scope throughout the year, but we're thrilled to have started with such an amazing bout, hosted by Rose City Rollers."

Over 2,000 logged on to watch the Denver-Rose City match on WFTDA.tv, with regular updates through WFTDA's Twitter and Facebook feeds. The launch of the channel featured game stats provided through Rinxter and announcers from WFTDA's partner for live talent, the Association of Flat Track Derby Announcers (AFTDA).

"WFTDA believes that, if we are patient and strategic, roller derby can enter the mainstream media while cultivating the values we wanted to protect when we formed the collective of the WFTDA in 2004," Juliana Gonzales, Executive Director of WFTDA, said. "We're looking to provide a model for how athletes can be the owners of their own media assets and make collective decisions about distributing, selling, or retaining those assets in the way that best benefits the sport's long-term growth."

The idea of an independent WFTDA broadcast channel took time and collaboration from many, including input from WFTDA member leagues and several trial broadcasts, especially during the 2011 Playoffs and Championships tournament season.

"WFTDA's mission and structure give us a completely outside-the-box viewpoint on sports broadcasting," Gonzales said." In WFTDA, the skaters are the owners, and the asset, and the viewers, and the fans. WFTDA skaters, teams, and member leagues represent every level of investment in a broadcast project, and because of this unique investment, the WFTDA members have been involved in every level of the decision-making. They are often asked to act and decide as skaters at the same time as they consider their point of view as fans, and attempt to make strategic decisions as owners and managers of the project.

The WFTDA.tv channel, which will broadcast bouts including the East Coast Derby Extravaganza in June, will offer the summer viewing season free of charge, a substantial change from previous seasons. The games broadcast during the 2012 WFTDA Playoffs and Championships will be offered at a low pay-per-view cost. Coupled with sponsorship funds, any profits from the project will be put toward maintaining WFTDA.tv and reinvestment in additional WFTDA projects and programming.

"Much of the feedback we received from the WFTDA marketing surveys confirmed what we were already thinking--fans loved the 2011 broadcasts, but wanted more affordable pricing," Vanstone said. "Our goal was to accommodate every budget, while still providing the best possible coverage. Therefore, the early season on WFTDA.tv is entirely free, with free post-event archives. The 2012 Playoffs and Championships will feature pay-per-view only, high quality broadcasts. We've lowered prices significantly for these tournaments and will offer all event archives for free, plus a free live audio cast, so that anyone can tune in--especially the skaters, who really look to learn from these broadcasts."

While WFTDA.tv will initially begin with bout productions from Blaze Streaming Media, the channel intends to provide a venue for league-produced content later in the year.

"We are thrilled to continue improving the quality of broadcast in women's flat track roller derby," says Blaze Streaming's Joe Christensen. "The Blaze production team seeks to support the goals of WFTDA through providing onsite production while yielding content ownership and business strategy to WFTDA. As a production team, this allows us to focus on covering the sport with a pursuit of quality that showcases the effort on the track."

WFTDA Releases First Quarter 2012 Rankings

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association has released the first quarter rankings for 2012, reflecting some movement as teams begin sanctioned play for the year. Quarter one rankings are a reflection of games played through March 31.

There was a quite bit of shuffling within the West Region. The Terminal City Rollergirls made the biggest jump, moving from #23 to #16. While the top three West teams remain the same, the Denver Roller Dolls moved up one spot, putting them at #4 and pushing the Rat City Roller Girls to #5. The Jet City Rollergirls dropped to #9, allowing Angel City Derby Girls to take #8. Arizona Roller Derby moves up three spots, from #13 to #10. In the mid-section of the West, Emerald City Roller Girls move from #12 to #14 and Wasatch Roller Derby move up two spots to #15. Sonoma County Roller Derby also makes a move upward, moving up five spots to #23.

The South Central Region also reflects a whirlwind of change. Houston Roller Derby, Tampa Roller Derby and the Omaha Rollergirls all made gains, setting at #4, #6 and #7, respectively. As a result, Atlanta Rollergirls and No Coast Derby Girls each shift a bit lower in the top 10. The Jacksonville Rollergirls make it into the top 10, rising two spots to #9, and the Tallahassee Rollergirls jumped five spaces to enter the region's top 10 for the first time. Green Country Roller Girls and Gold Coast Derby Grrls were nudged out of the top 10 as a result of Jacksonville and Tallahassee rising. The Oklahoma Victory Dolls gained five spots in this ranking, ending up at #12. Sioux City Roller Dames and Little City Roller Girls were both ranked for the first time, debuting at #21 and #22, respectively.

The North Central Region, by contrast, saw much less movement in this quarter, aside from some one- or two-spot shifts. The Brewcity Bruisers claim the #6 spot as the Ohio Roller Girls move up two to #7, bumping the Arch Rival Roller Girls and Cincinnati Rollergirls down. Toronto Roller Derby moves up to #15 and the Babe City Rollers, being ranked for the first tim, debut at #22.

Like North Central, the East Region saw limited movement during the first quarter. Maine Roller Derby and the DC Rollergirls swap places, putting DC into the region's top 10. The Queen City Roller Girls rose two spots to #13, and New Hampshire Roller Derby also moves up two spots, to #24.

WFTDA Opens Bidding Process for 2013 Big 5 Tournaments

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is seeking venues or entities that are interested in partnering with us to host the 2013 WFTDA Playoffs and Championships, known as The Big 5.

From early September through early October each year, the top 10 WFTDA member leagues from each of the four regions compete in their regional playoff tournaments. The top three playoff winners from each of the four regions advance to the annual championship tournament, a three-day event in early November, where the best skaters in the world compete for the top honor, “The Hydra.”

Hosting applications are now available. Historically, WFTDA tournaments have been “hosted” by a local WFTDA league, whose members manage tournament planning and promotion. The WFTDA has expanded its full-time staff to include a Tournaments Director in order to facilitate tournament planning, so a “host league” is no longer a tournament requirement.

The Playoffs and Championships are typically held in 2,000- to 6,000-seat venues. An ideal venue has a competition track, warm-up track, multiple dressing rooms, and a vendor area. Competitions must take place on a suitable, smooth, flat, obstruction-free skating surface.

Basic venue requirements:

Minimum of 110’ x 75’ of skating surface for the competition track

Warm-up track space of at least 90’ x 55’

Dedicated wired internet service of 10 mbps

For more information or to request an application and RFP, contact WFTDA Tournament Director Janis Kelley at bids@wftda.com.

WFTDA Releases Results of 2012 Demographic Survey

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association has released the results from its 2012 demographic survey of roller derby fans, skaters and support staff. More than 8,000 people from around the world responded to this year’s survey, with about 35 percent identifying themselves as fans and the remainder consisting of sports participants.

While the demographic profile of roller derby fans and skaters has remained relatively consistent since the WFTDA first began surveying its audience in 2010, this year’s report reflects the growing interest in the sport outside of the United States. About 20 percent of this year’s survey respondents were based outside of the U.S., compared to 12 percent last year.

According to the survey, the roller derby audience remains predominately female (about 61 percent) and has an average age of 37. The average skater age is a bit younger, at 31. The vast majority of fans (83 percent) have at least some college education, and respondents reported an even distribution of household incomes.

Read more details about the 2012 survey results and download the full report.

WFTDA Launches New Certification Program for NSOs

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is pleased to announce the expansion of its Certification program for roller derby officials to include a new committee focused solely on certifying non-skating officials (NSOs). The NSO Certification Committee will enable the WFTDA to better evaluate and recognize the diverse skill, experience, and knowledge of the officials filling essential roles as penalty trackers, scorekeepers, timekeepers and other trackside positions.

This move continues the WFTDA's multi-year effort to ensure consistent, quality officiating throughout the organization, through a combination of education at WFTDA Officiating Clinics and WFTDA Certification of referees and NSOs.

Previously, non-skating officials were able to obtain one level of WFTDA Certification through the current Referee Certification Program, while skating officials can be certified at Level 2 through Level 5. Over time, it has become evident that a more robust and precise process is needed for NSOs, as well.

The new NSO Certification system will feature:

Five levels of certification

Evaluations more specific to the jobs that NSOs perform

Tests more targeted to the duties of NSOs than the current Referee Certification rules test

The NSO Certification Committee consists of a chairperson and one representative from each WFTDA game play region: Intejill of Boston Derby Dames, Chairperson; 90 Degree Johnson of Queen City Roller Girls, East Region; TechKnuckle Nikki of Oklahoma Victory Dolls, South Central Region; Danziger of Naptown Rollergirls, North Central Region; Nine Inch Wheels of Dockyard Derby Dames, West Region.

Details about when and how NSOs can begin applying for Certification, as well as how NSOs certified under the current system can transfer into the new system, will be announced in the coming months. Also stay tuned for upcoming updates to the Referee Certification program.

WFTDA Opens Registration for North American Officiating Clinics Program

The WFTDA Officiating Clinics Program has been steadily growing and expanding since its pilot year in 2008. Each two-day clinic features WFTDA-vetted best practice policies for skating and non-skating officials, drills and exercises for honing practical skills, and opportunities for participants to discuss problems and questions related to officiating. Instructors are active in the roller derby community and passionate about making roller derby a globally accessible, standardized sport that is player and spectator friendly.

The cost of the registration for North American officiating clinics is $100 USD.

WFTDA's Apprentice Membership Program accepted 13 new leagues in the first quarter of 2012. There are now 81 women’s flat track roller derby leagues enjoying the benefits of WFTDA Apprenticeship. The latest class represents continued growth through all of WFTDA's game play regions and includes one additional European league.

Congratulations to:

Black Rose Rollers, of Hanover, Pennsylvania

Cedar Rapids RollerGirls, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cen-Tex Rollergirls, of Temple, Texas

Charlottesville Derby Dames, of Charlottesville, Virginia

Cheyenne Capidolls, of Cheyenne, Wyoming

West Coast Derby Knockouts, of Ventura, California

Designed to act as a WFTDA 101 tutorial, the Apprentice Program matches new leagues with an established WFTDA mentor, who guides her apprentice through WFTDA processes and requirements, and offers advice about league-specific issues. The curriculum can include everything from league formation to how to become ranked and qualify for WFTDA-sponsored tournaments. Upon completion of the program, apprentice leagues will have the knowledge and league recommendations to apply for full WFTDA membership. New apprentice leagues are accepted quarterly.

WFTDA Announces 2011 Q4 Rankings

Six teams debut in final WFTDA rankings for 2011

The WFTDA has released the final regional rankings for 2011. The current rankings reflect games played through December 31, 2011.

There is typically little movement in rankings in the fourth quarter, as many leagues take a break following the WFTDA Big 5 tournaments and during the winter holidays. However, this quarter saw six new teams earn ranking for the first time. Teams must play at least two WFTDA-sanctioned bouts against ranked teams before they become eligible for rankings.

The East Region will see no movement within the top 15 teams of the region. Gotham Girls Roller Derby still hold the #1 spot, followed by Philly Roller Girls at #2, and Charm City Roller Girls in the #3 spot. There were some small changes in the lower half of the region, as a result of three teams being ranked for the first time after graduating from the Apprentice Program last summer, and the CT RollerGirls jumping two spots from #16 to #14. Roc City Roller Derby was the highest ranked of the new East teams, coming in at #17. The Jersey Shore Roller Girls debut at #23, and Charlotte Roller Girls are ranked for the first time at #25.

The North Central Region had one team making its ranking debut. Toronto Roller Derby came in at #17, shifting lower-ranked teams down a notch. This was the only change in rankings for the North Central in quarter four. The Windy City Rollers, Minnesota RollerGirls and Naptown Roller Girls remain on top of the region.

In the West Region, the top three are still Oly Rollers in the #1 spot, Rocky Mountain Rollergirls at #2, and Rose City Rollers at #3. Changes come in at the #13 spot with Arizona Roller Derby moving up a notch, putting Silicon Valley Rollergirls at #14. Terminal City Roller Derby debuts at #23 and Sonoma County Roller Derby earns its first-time ranking at #28.

The South Central Region only saw one minor adjustment in rankings as Jacksonville Rollergirls moves up to #11, knocking the Hard Knox Roller Girls down to #12.

WFTDA is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with the Men's Roller Derby Association (MRDA).

“Insurance has previously been an obstacle for putting on events that involved both sexes. The door is now open for easy, worry-free scrimmages, bouts and events,” said Scott Meyer, MRDA Vice President.

As is the case with WFTDA member and apprentice leagues, MRDA members will not be required to enroll in the new MRDA insurance.

WFTDA Enters Formal Partnership With Skate Australia

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and Skate Australia announced today that the organizations have signed an agreement that will further the development of Australian roller derby and support WFTDA's efforts to grow its international membership.

This collaboration is designed to support the roller derby skaters and leagues in Australia in ways that align with both organizations' respective missions. The WFTDA operates worldwide but is focused on adult, female flat track roller derby leagues, while Skate Australia aims to serve all roller derby leagues in Australia, regardless of WFTDA affiliation.

The organizations have agreed to work together to train and accredit roller derby officials and coaches in Australia to facilitate the development of the sport, skaters and teams. They also will work to develop additional competitive pathways for Australian teams.

“Women’s flat track roller derby started really growing worldwide about five years ago,” said Juliana Gonzales, Executive Director of the WFTDA. “Australia was one of the first places we saw the sport take off outside the United States, and we immediately began looking for ways to extend WFTDA leadership and resources worldwide. We’re very lucky to have Skate Australia as a partner.”

“This agreement is the result of honest and open communication and highlights a shared commitment to the support of roller derby development in Australia,” added Matt Helmers, Skate Australia’s CEO.

The WFTDA will use its expertise in training and certifying referees to help develop an accreditation panel for Australian roller derby referees and officials. Both organizations will have representation on the panel, but the primary focus, like the U.S. model, will be on peer evaluation and democratic principles for training, evaluation, and accreditation. The WFTDA worked with Skate Australia to host the first ever WFTDA Officiating Clinics in Australia earlier this year, and will host a clinic there again in 2012.

Skate Australia will recognize WFTDA certification for roller derby referees and officials, and those accredited through the Australian Sports Commission may also become WFTDA certified at the appropriate level.

In addition, the WFTDA will develop training and continuing education materials for Australian roller derby skaters and coaches and provide clinics and mentoring programs to create a network of “WFTDA-endorsed” skater trainers in Australia.

“We believe these training programs will help Australian leagues build on what they have already accomplished through the hard work and initiative of the skaters who got the sport off the ground,” said WFTDA President Anna Krajcik.

Skate Australia will provide insurance for roller derby athletes and leagues in Australia and will develop new competitive opportunities for Australian roller derby teams at the local, state, national and international levels.
