WFTDA Newsletter - May 2007

The beginning of 2007 has been a busy time for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). A new version of the rules has been posted, the Dust Devil has been completed, the national rankings have been updated, and much more! Below are some highlights from the year so far.

WFTDA business announcements
The WFTDA has registered as a nonprofit business league (501(c)(6)). The current board of directors is: Hydra (President, Texas Rollergirls), Crackerjack (Vice President, Mad Rollin' Dolls), Whiskey Mick (Asst. Vice President, Tucson Roller Derby), Dahmernatrix (Treasurer, Duke City Derby), and Ivanna S. Pankin (Secretary, Sin City Rollergirls).

New WFTDA leagues
Welcome to the eight new leagues admitted to the WFTDA: Brewcity Bruisers (Milwaukee), Charm City Roller Girls (Baltimore), CT Roller Derby (Connecticut), Dominion Derby Girls (Virginia Beach), Fort Wayne Derby Girls (Indiana), Long Island Roller Rebels, No Coast Derby Girls (Lincoln, NE), and Steel City Derby Demons (Pittsburgh)!

Rules version 2.1
The WFTDA is pleased to announce the publication of rules version 2.1. This is the first revision of the rules since January 4th, 2006. The complete text can be found online at http://wftda.com/files/WFTDA_Rules_2-1.pdf.

Updated rankings
The national rankings have been updated! Dust Devil and three more months of interleague bouting created some shifts in league rankings (including a change in the number one seed, which now belongs to Rat City). The rankings will updated every quarter (June, September, and December 2007). The rankings, along with bout results, can be found on the WFTDA website at http://wftda.com/stats.html.

Annual meeting announced
The Big Easy Rollergirls will host the third annual WFTDA meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana during Memorial Day weekend.

Upcoming tournaments
There are two remaining, and eagerly anticipated, WFTDA tournaments in 2007. The first is the WFTDA Eastern Regional Tournament (aka Heartland Havoc), which will be hosted by the Ohio Rollergirls in Columbus, OH on August 17th - 19th at Batelle Hall in the Columbus Convention center. All Division 1 and 2 leagues in the Eastern Region are invited to participate. The top four tournament finishers will advance to the WFTDA Championship Tournament.
The second remaining tournament is the WFTDA Championship Tournament, which will be hosted by the Texas Rollergirls in Austin, Texas on September 29th - 30th at the Austin Convention Center. The top four winners from the Western Regional Tournament (Dust Devil) and Eastern Regional Tournament (Heartland Havoc) will compete for the #1 spot!

Also in the works
The WFTDA is currently developing a standardized way to calculate game stats, and a bout sanctioning process that will add more consistency to games and their results. The association is also working on a referee certification process that will ensure consistent and high-quality officiating of WFTDA sanctioned bouts and tournaments.
