The Women's Flat Track Derby Association congratulates the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls 5280 Fight Club of Denver, CO on winning the 2010 WFTDA Championship Tournament. The WFTDA tournament season came to an end on Nov. 7, 2010 after the top 12 seeds for the 2010 roller derby season faced off at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion in Chicago, IL, at an event hosted by the Windy City Rollers.
In what was ultimately a rematch from the 2010 West Region Playoffs, the #1 seed in the West, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, took on and defeated the #2 West Region seed and defending 2009 WFTDA Champions, the Oly Rollers, by a mere one point in the last seconds of the championship bout.
The Oly Rollers took second place in the tournament, followed by Gotham Girls Roller Derby of New York in third place and the Philly Roller Girls in fourth place.
The top three teams from each of the four regional tournaments will advance to the Uproar on the Lakeshore.
Chicago, known as the "Windy City," the "Second City," and the "City of the Big Shoulders," is the largest city in Illinois and the third most populous city in the United States. It is home to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), Deep Dish Pizza, and Al Capone; and has been the backdrop for many beloved cinema classics including The Blues Brothers, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Adventures in Babysitting, and The Dark Knight. Chicago is known for its Midwestern hospitality and relaxed personality, and is affectionately called the "largest small town in the U.S."
Located in the heart of downtown, the UIC Pavilion is close to major hotels and connected to the CTA, Chicago's public transportation system. This provides easy access to and from accommodations, eating establishments, leisure activities, and after parties. The city's magnificent skyline is easily visible from here, so enjoy the view!
With each year in this roller derby resurgence comes increased athleticism and game play, as well as exposure. Chicago's central location and position as a top media market provides a spectacular arena to give flat track roller derby the attention and coverage it deserves.
The Windy City Rollers are excited to share their beloved city and all its offerings with fans, skaters, officials, and volunteers from around the world.
Real. Strong. Athletic. Revolutionary.
