orangeville, ON, Canada
In September 2011 the first flat track roller derby league in Orangeville was born. ORG member Ashley Button was inspired after seeing some of the Toronto Roller Derby girls at the 2011 SLUTWALK (an annual protest held downtown Toronto against victim blaming). She went out that very day bought skates and decided to start a league in her hometown.
After various promotions, including an article in the local newspaper, postering the town, hosting “Meet’n’Greets” and Facebook, the word got out around town and the team finally got started in November 2011. Our first fresh meat training started in a small school gym. With more girls joining all the time we were able to move to the Orangeville Agricultural Centre in July of 2012. It is our practice space and where we hold all of our bouts.
The Orangeville Roller Girls (ORG) is a not-for-profit skater supported league, by the skaters for the skates. Although all members live their crazy lives we all have to pay monthly dues to keep the league running. Since we are now a derby family, it is all for the love of Roller Derby.
For the ORG, 2012 was really about team building, finding a new venue to skate, and learning the ins and outs of flat track roller derby. Having our first team ‘Pulp Affliction’ all passed the minimum skills test we were ready to get on the track for our first season in 2013.
Heading in to 2015, we had two teams: Pulp Affliction and Fox Force Five.
2014 was the first year that we played with both teams, as well as held try-outs for our Pulp Affliction team that was open to members of other leagues. We also had an extremely successful season winning every game at home until our season closer which was an amazing game!
With an an increase in skater intake at the end of 2015, ORG was proud to announce the renaming of their WFTDA charter team to Orangeville Roller Girls All Stars Misfit Militia. With the closing of the Misfit Militia independent team at the height of their rankings (the Misfits were ranked #3 in Canada and #32 in North America as of November 10th, 2015), the Orangeville Roller Girls wish to recognize their contributions to Canadian roller derby by maintaining the Misfit brand under ORG, alongside the league’s two current teams.
