2017 D1 Playoffs Dallas Game 11: Victoria vs. Minnesota

Victorian Roller Derby League (#1) vs. Minnesota RollerGirls (#4)

There was excitement in the air at the 2017 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Dallas as the Victorian Roller Derby League of Melbourne, Australia (Seed #1, WFTDA #1) faced off against the Minnesota RollerGirls of Saint Paul, Minnesota, U.S. (Seed #4, WFTDA #11) in Game 11. Both teams had already secured a spot at the 2017 International WFTDA Championships Philadelphia, but only Victoria will proceed to the Dallas tournament’s final game by overtaking Minnesota, 329-36.

The game began with the two teams trading off lead jammer status in each jam. Four minutes in, the Victoria jammers started their dominance of the game by taking lead jammer status six times in a row. During the first half, Minnesota kept the game interesting by completing 11 successful star passes, with a total of 20 in the game. With 11 minutes left in the first period, Victoria jammer Sarah Chambers earned two penalties in one jam, but Minnesota was unable to take advantage of the power jams. At halftime, the score was 146-13, VRDL.

Victoria started the second half out strong, taking lead jammer status the first 14 jams. With 11 minutes left in the game, Minnesota jammer Switch Please took lead jammer status for the first time in the second period. Teammate Jacked Pipes followed her lead, scoring 14 points.

As Victoria’s captain, Screw Barrymore, put it, “Minnesota adapted in the second half” to Victoria’s strategy, earning a total of 26 points in the second period. Jacked Pipes scored a team-high 25 points in the game.

“Victoria beat us so bad that it felt good!” Minnesota jammer Second Hand Smoke said while smiling.

Victoria was led offensively by Christy Demons with 118 points, Lady Trample with 82 points and IvyKnivey with 71 points, and defensively by Bianca Sciarretta, Dani Darko and Bicepsual.

Minnesota will face either the Texas Rollergirls of Austin, Texas, U.S. (Seed #2, WFTDA #6) or Arch Rival Roller Derby of St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. (Seed #3, WFTDA #8) at 4 p.m. Sunday to vie for third place. Victoria advances to the final game at 6 p.m. Sunday against the winner of the Texas-Arch Rival game.
