2017 D1 Playoffs Dallas Game 13: Queen City vs Wasatch

Queen City Roller Girls (#6) vs Wasatch Roller Derby (#12)

The Queen City Roller Girls of Buffalo, New York, U.S. (Seed #6, WFTDA #18), took their second win of the tournament weekend against Wasatch Roller Derby of Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S. (Seed #12, WFTDA #40) at the 2017 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Dallas in a 270–77 victory.

Queen City came out of the gate hard with a 17-point jam by jammer Crazy Squirrel, who capitalized on a power jam after Wasatch jammer Wreckless was sent to the box on a forearm penalty. LiBRAWLian then threw another quick, unanswered four points on the board for Queen City in the next jam. Buffalo jammer GO! increased their lead substantially shortly after with a 19-point power jam that brought their score up 40–0, aided by strong offensive plays by Head Huntress and Pepper Stix.

Going into jam 7, Queen City had taken a 72–0 lead, but a strong performance by Wasatch jammer Sookie Slaphouse put the first nine points on the board for Salt Lake City, aided by the cohesive defensive work of blockers Bruiser Ego, RIOT! Atchya, and Triple LeXXX; who repeatedly forced Crazy Squirrel out of bounds and ran her back, giving their jammer time to lap for points.

Throughout the game, Queen City was able to control much of the action on the track thanks to quick-footed moves by their jammers as blockers like Murphy, Tabrina Schreier and Bricks Hit-House provided well-timed offense and walls that were difficult for Wasatch to penetrate. Salt Lake City continued to be tenacious, however, taking advantage of the times they had lead and slowly chipping away at the score difference to keep themselves within 200 points at the end.

The highest scorer of the game was Buffalo’s LiBRAWLian with 99 points, followed by GO! with 86, and Crazy Squirrel with 85. Sookie Slaphouse was the lead scorer for Wasatch with 49 points, followed by Carpe Jugulum with 18, and Demon Spawn with eight.

Queen City finished the weekend 2–1 and despite some great moments on the track, Wasatch left the tournament winless. Stay tuned to WFTDA Tournament Central today for the final games of the weekend.
