2017 D1 Playoffs Seattle Game 5: Angel City vs. Tampa

Angel City Derby Girls (#2) vs. Tampa Roller Derby (#7)

Playing to secure a place in the championship tournament, Tampa Roller Derby (#7, WFTDA #21), of Tampa, Florida, USA took on the Angel City Derby Girls (#2, WFTDA #4) of Los Angeles, California, USA in Game 5 of the 2017 International WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs Seattle.

Angel City showed no mercy, winning 287-87 with a comprehensive performance, dominating the game from the first whistle.

From early in the first half, the Angel City Hollywood Scarlets were displayed their physical strength and fitness, and dictated pack speed. Angel City had a five-jammer rotation and picked up lead jammer status in 15 of 18 jams. The Angel City jammers completed multi-scoring passes on the majority of jams.

The Tampa Tantrums’ jammers were frequently stuck behind the fierce Angel City walls who kept most of the action to the first half of the track. Tampa blockers Flex A. Belle and Wasylkiw had some impressive individual blocker moments when under pressure from a tough opposition. When Tampa was able to speed up the pack, they were able to protect their points. At halftime both teams had equal penalties, with Tootsie Pop from Tampa and Laci Knight from Angel City having five penalties each. The score at halftime was Angel City 152 points to Tampa’s 30 points.

Angel City did not slow down in the second half. They kept the pack slow, all the while Tui Lyon and Octane Jane provided relentless hard-hitting offense to help their jammers. Satan’s Little Helper was the Scarlets’ lead scorer with 94 points, and Darby Dagger a close second with 87 points. Meanwhile, jammers PhDiesel and Smooth Operator had the most success for Tampa earning 28 points and 20 points respectively. Tampa was not able to capitalize on the rare Angel City mistake or power jam opportunity.

The game ended with a final score of 287 for Angel City to 87 for Tampa. Angel City moves on to play in Game 11 at 6 p.m. Saturday against either Jacksonville Roller Derby of Jacksonville, Florida, U.S. (#3, WFTDA #9) or the Rat City Rollergirls of Seattle, Washington, U.S. (#6, WFTDA #16), and Tampa will face off against the Windy City Rollers of Chicago, Illinois, U.S. (#9, WFTDA #28) in Game 9 at 2 p.m. Saturday.
