2017 D2 Playoffs Game 17: No Coast vs. Jet City
No Coast Roller Derby (#9) vs. Jet City Rollergirls (#4)
The action on track 1 of the 2017 International WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs and Championships Pittsburgh resumed at 4 p.m. EDT with a matchup between the Jet City Rollergirls’ Bombers of Everett, Washington, USA (#4, WFTDA #44) and the No Coast Roller Derby Mad Maxines of Lincoln, Nebraska, USA (#9, WFTDA #49). These teams had never played against each other before in a sanctioned game.
No Coast took the first lead of the game when jammer Slam scored 8 points as a strong No Coast wall of blockers held Jet City jammer Ivana Hercha for over a minute before she was able to pass to teammate Bombshell.
Jet City took control of the scoreboard just a few jams later, however, when Eva Derci snatched nine points as her blockers locked down Chewie in the pack, bringing the game up to 9-8 in Jet’s favor.
The Bombers steadily increased their lead as the game went on. A power jam in Jam 6 provided I’llah Smashya the chance to quickly score 10 unanswered points and call it off to give Eva Derci a power start in Jam 7 against just two No Coast blockers. She scored a quick grand slam on the power start, and got another five when Babe re-entered from the penalty box and was held by a tight Jet City wall of Beethoven’s Fist, Razor Wreckher, and Rocknrolla Chola. This brought Jets lead up to 34-8 by the end of the jam.
The game started to turn in No Coast’s favor halfway through the first jam — Slam went to the penalty box as No Coast’s jammer, but I’llah Smashya was sent in on a low block, springing Slam and giving her a power jam of her own against just one Jet City blocker, Bombshell. Despite some great one-on-one blocker by Bombshell that did slow Slam down for a moment she was able to break free and score points as I’llah Smashya was released from the box, only to return again with a track cut. The jam ended with a score of 45-32 in Jet City’s favor.
Slam had another power jam in Jam 15 as I’llah Smashya was held for over a minute but a strong No Coast Wall before she was able to pass the start to Bombshell. Slam had a 19-point jam that brought the score up to 59-58 in Jet’s favor.
That would be the closet No Coast would come to regaining the lead, however. A series of jammer penalties to No Coast over the next several jams would give Jet City the perfect opportunity to run up the score — Eva Derci scored 20 points in Jam 16 alone, part of the 44 points Jet City scored in just four jams to bring the score to 103-61.
Jet City continued to control the game in the second half as No Coast added a few points at a time every few jams, but were held scoreless in several others. Regardless of No Coast’s attempt to even the score by having Slam jam sometimes every other jam, the Bombers ended up with a victory and a final score of 182-163.
Jet City will play again Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Tucson Roller Derby (#2). No Coast will play the Columbia Quad Squad (#11) at 10:30 a.m.
