Australia’s Canberra Roller Derby League won the first ever 2018 WFTDA Continental Cup – North America West on August 26, 2018 in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S. Canberra entered their debut WFTDA postseason tournament as the #2 Seed, and defeated No Coast Derby Girls (Seed #10), Tucson Roller Derby (Seed #3), and Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (Seed #1) in a series of decisive victories to take home the gold.
The MVP award was presented to Canberra blocker, Slinger, who joined Canberra earlier this year and clearly gelled with her new team. Slinger was a formidable presence on the track throughout the weekend, and was instrumental in keeping opposing teams’ scores low while helping her jammers score hundreds of points.
This was the first Western North America WFTDA Continental Cup, following the 2018 tournament restructure that added a Continental Cups program to provide a regional postseason tournament opportunity for member leagues ranked below the cutoff for the International WFTDA Playoffs.
The Derby on Toast Bracket Challenge saw three people correctly predict 16 of 16 match-ups, and winners DoubleD, anneyyy, and Panserbinna will be entered into a random drawing to receive a wftda.tv watch pass and tickets to the 2018 International WFTDA Championships in New Orleans.
Congratulations to all the participating teams, and thanks to all the officials, announcers, photographers, and other volunteers who made the weekend a success. Special thanks to Omaha Rollergirls for hosting the first-ever Western North America Continental Cup and for welcoming the WFTDA community to Nebraska!
