2017 D2 Playoffs Game 11:
Auld Reekie vs. Oklahoma
Auld Reekie Roller Girls (#1) vs. Oklahoma Victory Dolls (#5)
Game 11 of 2017 International WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs Pittsburgh pitted the #1 seed Auld Reekie Roller Girls of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, against #5 seed Oklahoma Victory Dolls of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, U.S. Both teams went into the game hoping to recover from an earlier upset to stay in the running and avoid elimination from the tournament.
Auld Reekie put the first points on the board with a 4-0 jam from Rosie Peacock, who put up 13 more points two jams later while their blockers held OKVD scoreless for the first four jams. But once OKVD started earning points with their first 7-point jam from Shanksta, they didn’t stop, putting up points in nearly every jam of the half and overtaking Auld Reekie for the lead less than halfway through the period. Although OKVD had run the score up to 101-49 with only 5 minutes left in the half, Auld Reekie was able to put points up in three of the period’s last four jams, hoping to reset the game’s momentum after the half with a score of 128-61.
Looking to cover lost ground, and with a power jam on their side, Auld Reekie put up 23 points in the first jam of the second half and forced another penalty call on the OKVD jammer. After both teams put up single-digit points in the fast jams that followed, OKVD’s Trigger Trixie scored 14-0 to keep the team from Edinburgh at a more comfortable distance — the score now 155-95.
For the last 12 minutes of the game, the U.K. team was unable to go long even with lead jammer status, while the Oklahoma team continued to take advantage of its opponents’ penalty trouble to run up the score. One last big blow knocked the wind out of Auld Reekie’s sails when Rosie Peacock, the team’s second-highest-scoring jammer, received their 6th and 7th penalties in the same jam with several minutes left on the clock.
OKVD finished the game as strong as they started, their defense locked on Auld Reekie’s jammers down to the final minute, solidly shutting out the #1 seed’s hopes of remaining in the tournament with a final score of 257-131 for OKVD. The Oklahoma team will move on on Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern Time to play the winner of Game 15 between Ohio Roller Derby of Columbus, Ohio, U.S., (#8) and Treasure Valley Roller Derby of Boise, Idaho, U.S. (#13).
