Tucson Roller Derby (#2) vs. E-Ville Roller Derby (#15)

E-Ville Roller Derby (#15) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada took on Tucson Roller Derby of Tucson, Arizona, U.S., (#2) in game 6 of the 2017 International WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs Pittsburgh. The momentum shifted back and forth between the teams for the first half. Tucson emerged in the second half to take control of the game however, with the depth of their roster shining through and making them too strong for E-Ville on this occasion. E-Ville ended the game with a respectable 149 points to Tucson’s 250 points, an impressive achievement for their first D2 Playoffs appearance.

Tucson built up an early lead during the first fifteen minutes, with a score of 92 to 35 in their favor halfway through the first half. E-Ville then held Tucson scoreless for two jams and Shania Pain took advantage of the first power jam of the game to score 13 points. E-Ville was able to score more frequently as the first half progressed by capitalizing on five jammer penalties picked up by Tucson, making the first half an unpredictable and close game. E-Ville ended the half on a big jam, with D Mented picking up 18 points to leave them trailing Tucson by only 23 points at halftime.

In the second half, however, the Tucson walls figured out the E-Ville jammers and Tucson had a commanding presence on the track. E-Ville’s Shania Pain came into D2 Playoffs with an impressive jammer record, having scored 1220 points in her last 9 games with Tucson. She lived up to her reputation in this game, scoring another 63 points and making her E-Ville’s most successful jammer. On the other hand, the E-Ville walls struggled at times with the powerful Tucson jammers. Both Mystery Meat and Shana Bananna Hammock had solid performances as jammers for Tucson, picking up 85 and 51 total points, respectively.

With 5 minutes to go, both teams adjusted their strategies. E-Ville showed admirable grit and spirit as they played longer jams, trying to add as many points to their tally as possible. Meanwhile, Tucson wisely shifted gears to run down the clock and conserve energy as they claimed their victory, advancing to the next round of the tournament.

Tucson moves on to play Boston Roller Derby on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time in Game 14. E-Ville will play Middlesbrough Roller Derby in Game 12 tonight at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
