WFTDA Releases Sept. 30 Rankings and 2018 Championships Seeding

Today, WFTDA fans learned the highly anticipated matchups for the 2018 International WFTDA Championships. The WFTDA released the latest rankings of its member leagues, which reflect games played through Sept. 30, 2018 and are used to determine the seeding for WFTDA Championships, the biggest event in the sport of roller derby. The 2018 International WFTDA Championships will take place Nov. 9-11 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.

Adjusted Championships Bracket and Seeding

The top four ranked teams on June 30 automatically received an invitation and top seeding at Championships, with a bye to the second round. These teams were:

#1 Victorian Roller Derby League, of Melbourne, Australia

#2 Rose City Rollers, of Portland, Oregon, U.S.

#3 Gotham Girls Roller Derby, of New York, New York, U.S.

#4 Denver Roller Derby, of Denver, Colorado, U.S.

The next 24 ranked teams were seeded into two Playoffs with the top three finishers from each event moving on to Championships. These finishers were:

A Coruña, Spain

#1 Arch Rival Roller Derby, of St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.

#2 Crime City Rollers, of Malmö, Sweden

#3 Angel City Derby, of Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.

#1 Texas Rollergirls, of Austin, Texas, U.S.

#2 Jacksonville Roller Derby, of Jacksonville, Florida, U.S.

#3 Montréal Roller Derby, of Montréal, Québec, Canada

To complete the second round seedings on the bracket, the top-ranked first-place finisher (based on Sept. 30 rankings) will meet the #4 seed, Denver Roller Derby. The lower-ranked first-place finisher will face the #3 seed, Gotham Girls Roller Derby. Based on these placements, the second and third place finishers will be placed in a first-round game where each of the second-place finishers from one playoff compete against the third-place finisher from the other playoff. The winners of these games will move on to second round games against #2 seed Rose City Rollers, and #1 seed and 2017 World Champions, Victorian Roller Derby League.

The 2018 postseason is organized using a competitive S-curve seeding system for all brackets. As the original Championships bracket released last month did not adhere to the standards of a competitive S-curve, WFTDA Games and the WFTDA Board of Directors have adjusted the bracket to bring it into compliance.

Based on the Sept. 30 rankings, Arch Rival Roller Derby is the higher-ranked Playoffs winner, and will meet Denver Roller Derby. Texas Rollergirls, the lower-ranked winner, will play Gotham Girls Roller Derby. The second-place and third-place finishers from each of the Playoffs were placed in the first round to complete the Championships bracket. All 10 teams will join the WFTDA, our hosts Big Easy Rollergirls, and thousands of derby fans in New Orleans, Louisiana, Nov. 9-11 at the Lakefront Arena.
