Two teams from Buenos Aires, Argentina traveled half a world away to face each other in the 2018 International WFTDA Playoffs A Coruña. In the battle of hometown rivals, 2×4 Roller Derby (Seed #7, WFTDA #18) was victorious over the Sailor City Rollers (Seed #10, WFTDA #28), 210-53. Sailor City and 2×4 have played each other in five official games in the last three years, with 2×4 taking all victories. The most recent game had a spread of just 29 points.
But facing off in a physical playoff game in Spain, 2×4 jumped out to a 28-1 lead through the first five jams. Sailor City shook off an early penalty slump to put up some points, but 2×4’s tripod defense kept scoring locked down. Team Osom finished the half with two big jams, a 19-point power jam by Rayo and a 15-point run by Tropical Mecánica.
The second half started off as a low-scoring defensive battle, with both squads featuring tight tripod formations that locked down jammers. Twice in the half a full jam went by with neither jammer making an initial pass. But Sailor City ran into penalty trouble, and a power jam allowed 2×4 jammer Lula Zan to post a 23-point effort and pad the lead.
Lula Zan of 2×4 led all scorers with 63 points, while teammates Rayo had 56 and Tropical Mecánica had 51. They combined to help Team Osom to a 71.4 lead jam percentage. Sailor City’s Rosetta Stoned had 15 points, and the team was led defensively by KQ and Roma.
2×4 advances to face Angel City Derby of Los Angeles, California, U.S. (Seed #2, WFTDA #8) in Game 8 at noon CET on Saturday. Sailor City moves to the consolation bracket and will face Detroit Roller Derby of Detroit, Michigan, U.S. (Seed #12, WFTDA #34) in Game 10 at 4 p.m. CET on Saturday.
