Montréal

If you’re planning your trip to Montréal, here’s just a few things you’ll need in your suitcase:

  • Neon–Montréal recommends wearing as much neon as possible at all times.
  • Winter boots–yes, it will be winter in Montréal, and you may need boots. Preferably with sparkles or in neon.
  • A warm (but of course, neon) jacket – see above. Cold.
  • A Toque
  • A Toboggan, if you think you need it, but you could probably pick one up in Canada.
  • Your passport. If you’re not from Canada, you’re going to need your passport for this one!
  • Your tickets! Prices go up at the door, if we have any left!
  • Your jersey. Let everyone know who you are.
  • Canadian currency. Check out the pretty colours!
  • The letter U–Honourable, Colours, Favourite…U get the picture.
  • Napkins–for all the Poutine you’ll be having.
Montréal

There’s more to Montréal than just roller derby (weird, right?):

  • Montréal is the biggest francophone city in the Americas! Don’t worry, English is widely spoken as well.
  • The world’s first recorded indoor ice hockey game was played in Montréal on March 3rd, 1875.
  • Montréal’s Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel gained international recognition when John Lennon and Yoko Ono conducted held their legendary bed-in from May 26 to June 2, 1969, writing the anti-war song “Give Peace a Chance.”
  • Montréal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics, during which Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect “10” and captured the All-Around gold medal.
  • Assassin’s Creed, a popular action-adventure video game was created in Montréal.
  • Famous people born/from Montréal: Leonard Cohen, Shawn Levy, Celine Dion, Mordecai Richler, Jay Baruchel, Dennis Villeneuve, Emily Haines, A-Trak, Mac DeMarco, Grimes.
  • Montréal’s Underground City is a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city connecting 20 miles of shopping malls, museums, universities, hotels, banks, offices and seven metro stations.  Pretty handy in -35 degree weather!
  • Hungry?  Montréal has the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada and the second highest in North America after New York City.
  • Poutine is the most famous food in Montréal, consisting of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy, and is so delicious.  Get some at La Banquise or Poutineville.
  • Still hungry? Montréal Bagels are a must have. Try them from St. Viateur or Fairmount Bagel.
  • Montréal is home to the world famous Cirque du Soleil.
